Who Are We?

Bona Bolo eye care project was initiated in response to 2010 soccer world cup in South Africa. The founders were charged to ensure that children will be able to enjoy soccer at their door step and realised that the dream would be impossible for those who could not see due to uncorrected refractive errors. The program was started by conducting eye screenings at soccer matches and fan clubs. Children who could not see had their eyes tested at optometric practices and got spectacles in order to see the ball. The success, thereof, lead to the stake holder’s realisation that the impact of the project could reach beyond better vision in the sporting field , but could be an empowerment towards better learning in the classroom; hence the continued support and enthusiasm to conduct the program beyond 2010 with a direct focus on learner vision. .

Mission

Building partnerships to provide eye care for needy learners

Vision

Our contribution is geared to the elimination of learning barriers due to uncorrected refractive error.

Operations

Bona Bolo identify schools (preferably quintile 1) who has not received eye care services through school health program. We invite local optometrists in the area to participate in the screening of children in their neighbourhood to build relationships and sustainable services. Bona bolo also engage unemployed youth with matric to serve as non-clinical volunteers during the screening process. Learners found with refractive errors are referred to local optometrist for refractions and Bona Bolo provides spectacles that are dispensed by the refracting optometrist. Since 2010, Bona Bolo has screened over 9000 children in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State and Kwa Zulu Natal. .
